Synopsis:
Breaking up is hard to do. At least the first few times.
Even though Molly Grant has only a handful of relationships behind her, she’s already been through more divorces than she can count.
At the premier Manhattan law firm where she’s a matrimonial attorney, the hours are long, the bosses tyrannical, and the bonuses stratospheric. Her clients are rich, famous, and used to getting their way. Molly’s job—and primary concern in life—is to work as hard as possible to make sure they do. Until she meets the client who changes everything...
Fern Walker is the desperate former wife of a ruthless media mogul. Her powerful ex is slowly pushing her out of her young children’s lives, and she fears losing them forever. Molly—haunted by an incident from her own past—finds herself unable to walk away from Fern and sets out to help her. She just needs to do it without her bosses finding out.
Now, as complications both professional and personal stack up, Molly can only hope that her own wits, heart, and instincts are enough—both in and out of court.

My Thoughts:
Molly Grant works for a very successful law firm in New York and has just transferred to the matrimonial department. She's hoping to find her niche and survive the next two years to receive her five-year bonus to pay off her loans. Unfortunately, Molly is in for one hell of a ride. Her boss is extremely demanding, often insisting that Molly drop everything to accompany her on her many whims, and she also has the devil as a client.
When she meets Fern Walker, the ex-wife of a media mogul who is trying to push her out of their children's lives, she knows she has no choice but to help her. Unfortunately, her boss won't take up the case and Molly finds herself representing Fern in secret. As long as Molly's boss doesn't find out, things should go smoothly, right?
Have you ever read a book that keeps your stomach in knots throughout pretty much the entire read? That is how I felt about The Love Wars. Trust me though, this is not a bad thing. I immediately connected with Molly, her need for something different and her desperation to make the five year mark and receive her bonus to pay off her parent's loans for her schooling. I too wish I could do that for my parents, so I was anxious to see her succeed. As if I didn't have enough reason to like her with her big heart and fantastic sense of humor, I would have fallen head over heels for her when she agreed to represent Fern. She proved that maybe not all lawyers are out for just money and that some actually do help the underdog.
Aside from Molly, there are plenty of other characters in The Love Wars that can get your heart racing, only with the opposite effect. Lillian, Molly's boss, is a beast of a woman. She's brilliant, but has high demands and cares little (ok, not at all) for anyone besides herself. Cross her once and you are on her bad side forever. She is one of those characters that you love to hate, and hate her I did. We are also witness to some horrific behavior by clients as well, particularly one woman who is obsessed with her cats (not that I blame her, I love my cats too).
As I said before, my stomach was in knots for a good 90% of Molly's story. I honestly can't even recall turning the pages, I was so involved with these characters that it felt more like I was there in the courtroom instead of reading words on a page. I just had to know if Fern would be reunited with her children and if Molly was going to get caught. I also needed to know that Fern's children were going to be ok. They were in a hard position, being pinned between parents, and having been in the same position myself, it was the most important aspect of the story for me.
Overall, this was a truly engaging read. I was shocked to learn that this is the first novel for Heller, she clearly has a natural gift. She knows the law and how to spin a story, no doubt taking a few pointers from her career as a divorce lawyer. I can't wait to read her next book.
I highly recommend The Love Wars to anyone and everyone, especially is you love chick lit and drama.
