I come a family of book lovers. Just about all of us are obsessed with books, with a few exceptions here and there. My mom is probably the biggest book nut of us all, which says a lot when you see my collection. She reads a ton. Probably a few books a week, which doesn't seem like much until you know her schedule. But there is one habit she has when it comes to books that just drives me absolutely crazy: she cheats! She always reads the last few pages of the book before she starts it. Am I the only one who thinks this is completely wrong? Isn't the whole point of starting at the beginning to work your way to the end and have the final "Ah ha!" feeling?
I'll admit that when I am reading a book and I am desperate to know what happens, I sometimes think about flipping towards the end just to give my heart the chance to stop beating so fast. I *think* about it, but I don't actually do it. I just can't bring myself to do it because I know that once I know how it ends, I might lose interest in the rest of the story. Why go back and read the rest if I already know how the story goes?
What about you? Do you "cheat" and read the end of the book first, or are you more like me and believe getting there is half the fun?
:-) Yes, On occasion I do cheat!! But I'm a re-reader... if it's well-written, I love to enjoy the book completely and spoilers can never spoil that!!
ReplyDeleteHahaha sometimes I do flip through the end of a book looking for a certain character's name. There are some books I refuse to finish if a certain character is dead!
ReplyDeleteI can see doing it every once in a while, but not every time like she does. Drives me crazy when I ask her how a book is going and she says "Oh, it's pretty good but I already know what happens" lol.
ReplyDeleteI've thought about it yes but no never. Omg no.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! My sister does this too and it drives me insane! Just today I asked her how how she's liking The Hunger Games. THe first 30 pages in and she coudn't stop talking about it. SHe was still gushing about it, but said she already knew how it was going to end because she'd looked it up on wilipedia. *sigh* I personally like the suspense of not knowing and being suprised at the end!
ReplyDeleteI'll admit that if I am not going to read a book but am still curious to know about it, I will look it up. But OMG The Hunger Games???? Those are probably the best examples to use when telling people NOT to look ahead. You need to read those without knowing to get the full impact of the story. Man, I love those books...
ReplyDeleteI'm a cheater, I admit it. I might not read the last few pages first, but I almost always read them before I'm even halfway into the book.
