On My Wish List (99)

On My Wish List is a fun weekly event hosted by Workaday Reads and runs every Saturday. It's where we list all the books we desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming.

Synopsis:

A new breathtaking novel from Natalie Standiford about love and trust during the Cold War.

Laura Reid goes to Leningrad for a semester abroad as Cold War paranoia is peaking in 1982. She meets a young Russian artist named Alexei and soon, with Alexei as her guide, Laura immerses herself in the real Russia--a crazy world of wild parties, black-market books and music, and smuggled letters to dissidents. She must keep the relationship secret; associating with Americans is dangerous for Alexei, and if caught, Laura could be sent home and Alexei put under surveillance or worse. At the same time, she's been warned that Soviets often latch onto Americans in hopes of marrying them and thus escaping to the United States. But she knows Alexei loves her. Right?

As June approaches--when Laura must return to the United States--Alexei asks Laura to marry him. She's only nineteen and doesn't think she's ready to settle down. But what if Alexei is the love of her life? How can she leave him behind? If she has a chance to change his life, to rescue him from misery, shouldn't she take it?

This book is sure to have my heart racing uncontrollably. Does he really love her or does he just want to marry her for a way out? Seriously, I don't know if I can handle the stress! But I have to try. I'm a sucker for love stories and I just need to know if this one is going to work out. Clearly, I care a little too much about fictional characters and their lives. Maybe I should seek a support group...

And you? What's on your wish list? Leave me a link and I'll come check it out!

September is for Sequels Challenge: Goals

The September is for Sequels Challenge is hosted by the very awesome Lisa Loves Literature. The goal is to read four (or more) sequels between September 1st and 30th. For the official rules, go here

My Goals:

The goal is four but these all need reading so hopefully I can get to all of them. I may even have one or two more deep in the shelves somewhere that would qualify for the challenge. If I can read as much as I want to, that is. I'll do my best to post reviews for these too as I read them.

Review: Bitter Orange by Marshall Moore

Synopsis:

Seth Harrington can be invisible or undetectable, but he is not a superhero. The ability only works in morally grey situations; the rest of the time, he can't turn it on and off at will. He can use a movie ticket stub to buy a coffee or a one-dollar bill to pay for a cell phone. He can stop muggings in plain sight, unseen, but only with worse violence. But this only adds to his confusion about his place in the world. Still reeling from the horrors of the September 11 terrorist attacks and ambivalent about his future, Seth is at a crossroads: Can he be one of the good guys by doing bad things, or are his new found powers part of someone else's malevolent agenda? There are no easy answers or expected outcomes in Marshall Moore's exploration of urban life and the ways that people can disappear.

My Thoughts:

With all the media about superheroes and superpowers these days, it was completely refreshing to come across Bitter Orange. Never once have I thought about how different it would be to have a superpower that you could only use to do bad things. A big bonus to this was that invisibility is my own personal superpower of choice. Oh come on, you know that you've at least one time thought about what power you would choose if given the chance. I always choose invisibility, so being able to watch Seth deal with this was even more fascinating to me.

I loved the inner struggle of Seth Harrington as he tried to understand his new powers. He wasn't a bad person, but the lure of his ability got the better of him. He needed to test it and that meant trying out some not so great tasks. He paid for things with less money than owed, or sometimes he didn't even use money and paid with receipts. He stole, got in fights and even spooked around a few houses (one of my favorite parts). But through it all, he still had a likable personality and this made it easier to forgive him when he misbehaved.

Aside from his new mysterious powers, Seth is struggling in many other ways. He is still coming to terms with having lost a friend and career to 9/11, his friend Elizabeth refuses to accept that he is not interested in her sexually, and he is developing a crush on his roommate, Sang-hee. He is also working towards a degree and injured in a car accident. Now probably isn't the best time for these powers to come into play, but he works with it the best he can.

When it comes to surprise twists, I'm not easily fooled. Usually I can figure out the ending of a book long before I get to it, but that was by far not the case with Bitter Orange. The last ten percent of this story just blew me away and had my heart pumping heavily. I was shocked at the truth of Seth's powers and the ending was just incredible. I didn't see it coming and I didn't want it to end. I need more!

Overall, Bitter Orange was a fantastic read. Seth's story is darkly humorous and captivating. I highly recommend it to fans of adult fiction, paranormal, and dark fiction.

Review & Giveaway: Two of a Kind by Yona Zeldis McDonough

Synopsis:

Ten years after losing her husband, Christina Connelly has worked through the pain, focusing on raising her teenage daughter and managing her small decorating business. But her romantic life has never recovered. Still, it’s irksome to be set up with arrogant, if handsome, doctor Andy Stern at her friend’s wedding. If he wasn’t also a potential client, needing his Upper East Side apartment redesigned, she would write him off.

This is never going to work, Andy thinks. Still grieving his wife and struggling with a troubled son, he’s not looking for a woman, and certainly not someone as frosty and reserved as Christina. Their relationship will be strictly business. Yet to everyone’s surprise—including their own—these two find themselves falling in love.

But if reconciling with their pasts is difficult, blending their lives and children to create a new family is nearly impossible. They've been given a second chance …but can they overcome all the obstacles in the way of happily ever after?

My Thoughts:

To be honest, I wasn't sure at first how much I was going to enjoy this story because it took me a little longer than expected to get into it. It starts out with Christina and Andy meeting at a wedding and they both seem to regard the other as pompous and rude. Christina, a decorator, immediately came off rather cold and unlikable as she made her way through the wedding host's home and nitpicked at their taste.

Andy, or Dr. Stern, didn't impress me at first either. He seemed stiff and stuck up and seemed to like being rude for absolutely no reason other than that he could be. He too was judgmental and I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to connect to characters who were constantly judging people based on their tastes or where they lived. But as I read on, I realized that these were the actions of two people who were hurting badly and were trying to cope any way they knew how, even if that meant that their comments and actions were often taken the wrong way.

Christina's business isn't going very well with less and less new clients and another client who hasn't paid her. She needs this job to help support her daughter, Jordan, whose only goal in life is to become a dancer. Jordan barely eats, pushes her body to its limits and is also still devastated from the loss of her father ten years before.

Andy is a highly successful OBGYN with a demanding schedule. He rarely has time for his son, Oliver, and even though has seen the signs that Oliver is becoming distant and withdrawn, he has yet to do much about it. Oliver seems to be the one in this story who is struggling the most emotionally. He is still in denial about his mother and things only get worse when things go wrong with his girlfriend and best friend. He doesn't know how to express his feelings and doesn't think anyone would understand him even if he tried.

The relationship between Andy and Christina is anything but quick. In fact, they despise each other at first. Christina only agrees to decorate Andy's house because she is struggling and needs the money. They keep a strictly business relationship at first, but things change for Andy when he sees that Oliver connects with Christina, and then again when they are forced to spend a few hours stranded together. Their relationship progresses slowly and in a way that feels natural and not forced. I quickly found myself liking Andy and Christina more and more and was desperate for them to build a family together.

Two of a Kind is written in alternating view points, switching each chapter to advance the story along seamlessly and expertly. Each character has their own unique voice and their stories are enough to suck you in and hold you for hours. If you are looking for a quick read, this isn't it. The author takes her time, carefully choosing each word, slowly creating a heartfelt tale of love, loss, friendship and family.

Two of a Kind was not at all what I was expecting. It was more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys longer, descriptive reads, Chick Lit, or is looking for something a bit heavier and emotional.

Waiting On Wednesday (99)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Synopsis:

Twenty years ago, college student Dani Lancing was kidnapped and brutally murdered. The killer was never found, and the case has long gone cold. Her parents, Patty and Jim, were utterly devastated, their marriage destroyed. While Jim fell apart, Patty was consumed by the unsolved case. She abandoned her journalism career and her marriage to spend every waking hour searching and plotting. She keeps contact with Tom, Dani's childhood sweetheart, who has become a detective intent on solving murders like Dani's. When he finds a lead that seems ironclad, he brings Patty in on it. After years of dead ends, her obsession is rekindled, and she will do anything for revenge, even become a killer herself-dragging her whole family into the nightmare once again, as lies and secrets are uncovered.

Something about this book just screams at me to read it. I love crime. I don't mean that I want it to happen, but I love solving mysteries and murders and I am pretty obsessed with the Investigation Discovery channel. I even went to school for Criminal Justice because it just fascinates me. But as a parent, the thought of one of my children being kidnapped or harmed keeps me up at night. Many nights. So I can definitely relate to Patty here and I think I would also do what she is doing. How could you not? My heart aches for this poor, fictional woman and I haven't even read her story yet. I'll be picking this one up as soon as possible and bumping it up to the top of my reading list.

What special something are you waiting on this week? Leave me a link in the comments and I'll come check it out!

Synopsis:

Rose Parker's husband has been lying. About everything.

When a conversation with her husband triggers questions, Rose Parker uncovers alarming answers that shatter her perfect life. But it is only when she shoves her belongings in her SUV and drives off that Rose realizes just how far from perfect her life actually was. She has nowhere to turn.

While debating between distressing sleeping arrangements-her mother’s house full of questions or a hotel room with too much solitude-Rose bumps into an acquaintance from her gardening class and allows bubbly, exuberant Becky to indulge her in a wild night full of whiskey, weeping, and whispered confidences. Suddenly, Rose has a new friend, a roof over her head, and two gorgeous men moving her out of her marital home.

As Rose struggles to settle into her new life, she remains determined to comprehend her past. And with time and distance and especially wine, comes knowledge. Frank wasn’t the only one lying to her. Rose was lying to herself.

Teaser:

"I hit send and thrust the phone away like it had contacted Ebola. It slid across the hardwood and became tangled in a pair of Becky's yoga pants, What the hell did I just do?"

So I've Been Blacklisted...

*EDIT: This post was not created to attack anyone in specific. This is in response to EVERYONE who thinks that those who enter a lot of giveaways are out to profit or snatch up everything for themselves. This is apparently a hot topic among bloggers that I was not aware of. Being a chronic giveaway tweeter, I thought I'd share my side*

So I've been blacklisted...

I came across a post today about people who enter too many giveaways, sell their winnings, win multiple copies of books, or only use their Twitter accounts for giveaway entries. After commenting, I saw in this person's Twitter feed that they were talking about me specifically as an offender. Apparently there is a Twitter code that I was not aware of. It is NOT ok to tweet about too many giveaways. If you do this, your name is thrown into the "never gonna happen" pile and even if your name does come up as a winner, a new one will be chosen.

I sent this person an email and I thought I would share those thoughts with you too. This is the email I sent to this person (minus the last few sentences in which their blogs are mentioned out of respect for their privacy) and I'm only sharing it here so that you can understand my side, NOT to attack the recipient:

"So I just came across your Twitter remarks about me and I figured I'd just email you to air this all out and clear up a few things. I never sell books that I win. Ever. If I don't like a book or don't want to keep it, I pass it along through my own giveaways or on Freecycle. Second, I never accept second copies of books that I win unless they come in a multiple book giveaway. In that case, I again use them for my own giveaways or pass them along to other people I know who want to read them. Yes, I tweet a crap ton of giveaways, usually at night while I am sitting with the husband watching who knows what I will go through my daily tweets. Do I win a lot? Yes, I do. Why do I win? Because I do these tweets almost daily. Does it look badly on me? Sure. Is Twitter an effective way to win giveaways? Of course. But if someone has a problem with people using Twitter to enter giveaways then they shouldn't have that as an option.
Why do I enter so many giveaways? Simple: if I don't win it, I probably won't be able to read it. I am a stay at home mother of two kids. My son has special needs and I have a TON of meetings for him that I need to be able to go to at short notice. Hence my lack of a job. Reading is my sanity. I spend most of my free time reading, which is everyday that my kids are in school. Winning gift cards is how I contribute to my household. If I can win a gift card to Amazon or Walmart, that's less money that is taken out of our already tight budget to buy stuff for my kids. The more books I can win to read, the less I have to buy.
I'm sorry if this puts me on the blacklist. I'm not out to win the world. I don't have a ton of different accounts to enter giveaways a bunch of times and I don't cheat. I just do a crap ton of daily tweets. That's what that option is there for, to do it daily."

Now I may be in the wrong here and shouldn't have emailed them, but I don't like being accused of things and I simply wanted to let them know why I enter a ton of giveaways. Will this change their opinion of me? Probably not, and that's too bad. In fact, I probably won't even get a response, but that's ok.

I'm writing this post for several reasons. One, I know that there are a lot of other people who use Twitter for giveaways. I would hate to see these people end up with the same fate as me. But who is to say how you use your own account? If it were against Twitter rules to use tweets as giveaway entries, this wouldn't be an option.

Do I use my Twitter for giveaways? Heck yes. Those daily tweet options add up. More often than not, winners of my own giveaways are those that have done a lot of the daily tweets. Do I care? No, because they are just doing what the rules allow and they are also promoting my blog. How is that bad? But something else I want to mention is this: For people like me, shy and not sure how to go about creating new friendships, you aren't going to make much progress in the blogging community. I've tried many times to start discussions on Twitter and no one responds. I've responded to other people and have been ignored. It's upsetting and it's frustrating. Honestly, it just feels like I'm sitting there talking to myself and that's not fun. I keep trying though and hopefully my Twitter will be deemed more than just a giveaway account. I'd love to sit and talk with people, I just don't know how to go about starting those conversations.

Secondly, just because someone enters a lot of giveaways it doesn't mean that they are selling their winnings, cheating, or hoarding dozens of copies of books. Just because you can cruise through their mailbox posts and see what is coming in, you have no way of knowing what is going out. Who is to say what you do with your books anyway? Why can't you keep them? If you are hosting a giveaway and have a specific idea of what you want your giveaway book to be used for, specify that. If you don't want certain people entering your giveaway because you want to send that book to someone you know, why have the giveaway in the first place? Just send that person the book and live stress free.

If you have an issue with someone who is entering your giveaways, tell them. Email them. If you are using Rafflecopter, their emails are readily available to you. Or you can DM them on Twitter. It will save you a lot of time and anger.

Lastly, if I have been blacklisted on your blog as well, please send me an email at bookcoverjustice (at) comcast (dot) net and let me know. I don't want to waste your time or mine.

Easy Canvas Prints: Review and Giveaway!

I am so excited today to share with you this review and giveaway for Easy Canvas Prints. I was recently given the opportunity to receive a print for review. I jumped at the chance. One of my favorite things to do (besides read, of course) is take pictures, especially of my kids. I've always wanted to turn one of their pictures into a canvas print but wasn't sure about the process.

I don't know what I was worried about, the process was incredibly easy! To show you just how easy it was, I took screenshots of each step. I had absolutely no trouble at all and the process took less than ten minutes!

Step 1: Choose Your Image

As you can see, it's pretty simple to use. Simply upload your image from your computer, Facebook, or even Instagram.

Step 2: Adjust Your Photo

Use the tool on the right to adjust the size of your photo. Zoom in or out easily, then click and hold the picture to move it around to where you want it.

Step 3: Select Your Border Option

You have three choices: Mirror Image, Image Wrap or Border Color. I chose the wrap around option where the photo continues around the sides.

Step 4: Color Finishing and Retouching

If you have any spots you want to remove or touch up, this is when you do it. You are also given the choice to change your photo into Black & White or Sepia. I kept my photo natural and decided against any touch up.

Step 5: Save your item and proceed to checkout

If you are looking to create more than one canvas, now is your chance to start a new one with a new picture or you can easily create a duplicate of your first. After you have finished, simply proceed to checkout.

Step 6: Checkout

It's as easy as it looks. Simply fill out the form and continue to on to review your purchase one last time. Once finished, you will come to your receipt page. Simply print out your receipt and you are all done!

Step 7: Receive Your Easy Canvas Print!

I apologize for the lousy lighting, sunlight is rare in this house and my flash wanted to wash out the complete middle of the print. Anyway, I absolutely LOVE my print! I'm not sure where I will be hanging it yet, but I am on the hunt for the perfect place. The quality is amazing and it looks just like a real photo. I will definitely be ordering many, many more!

Giveaway:

Thanks to Easy Canvas Prints, I have been given the opportunity to share these products with you! This giveaway is open to those in North America and ends on 9/7. Please read the rules in the Rafflecopter form before entering. Good luck!
