Waiting On Wednesday (95)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Synopsis:

When high school oddball and introvert Jessica Chai is killed in a car accident, her parents decide that Jessica would have wanted her organs donated to those who so desperately need these gifts of life. But Jessica is angry about dying and being dismembered. Taking the idea of cell memory to the next level, not only do the recipients get pieces of Jessica, but gets pieces of their memories and lives moving forward—she knows what they know and keeps tabs on their growth, recovery, and development. This begins her journey to learn her purpose as she begins to grasp that her ties to these teenagers goes beyond random weirdness. It's through their lives that Jessica learns about herself, as she watches the lives she literally touched continue to interlock.

When I was very young, probably too young to have been watching it, I saw a movie called Body Parts about a man who receives an arm transplant. Unfortunately for this guy, the arm used to belong to a serial killer and seems to have a mind of its own. Of course the arm starts making the guy do terrible things and he goes on a search to figure out just what is happening to him. I remember being totally creeped out by this movie (again, I was like ten lol) and it has stuck with me ever since. The synopsis of this book kind of reminds me of that movie and I just can't imagine not devouring it as soon as possible. The idea that you can live on through your donated parts is just plain creepy. So I guess what I'm saying here is this: I need this book. Like yesterday. I think I'm also gonna check out Netflix and see if Body Parts is on there and if so I'm gonna give it another go. Hopefully it won't be as traumatizing now that I'm in my thirties LOL.

What about you? Are you waiting on anything special? Leave me a link and I'll come check it out!

Review: All My Restless Life to Live by Dee DeTarsio

Synopsis:

Life is a soap opera, especially for Elle Miller, who writes for one. (Ellen dropped the “n” in her name in hopes of finding a better ending for herself.) When her laptop crashes, she borrows her recently deceased dad’s computer and gets way more than she bargained for.

Elle unravels mysterious communications from his computer, while her mom decides to give Internet dating a try. As Elle tries to save her career at I’d Rather Be Loved with a storyline featuring a trip through Atlantis, she takes a trip to the Emmys, and finds herself in the middle of a romance between a real doctor and a hunk who just plays one on TV.

Friends, family, and clues from “the other side” all help Elle figure out the difference between living the good life and living a good life.

My Thoughts:

Elle Miller doesn't just work for a soap opera, her life is one. Still struggling with the loss of her father and the possibility that the show she works for might be canceled, Elle is working hard to keep afloat. When her laptop crashes and she can't afford to get a new one, she "borrows" her father's. Now strange things are happening and Elle is sure that her father is trying to communicate with her. As if this isn't enough, Elle is also torn between two very different men and is pretty sure she is losing her mind. Forced to finally deal with her father's death and her own insecurities, Elle has to decipher her father's clues and figure out just what life is all about.

Elle Miller is a smart, funny and quirky character. I liked her immediately. Her inner monologue reminded me quite a bit like my own, especially when dealing with people who just don't seem to understand how truly awful they are but you are unable to call out on their crap (like your boss). She had a wicked sense of humor but is also very caring and warm. I could feel her sadness over the loss of her father and understood how hard she was struggling with it, especially since she was still dealing with the guilt of not having said a final goodbye. Had Elle been a real person, I think we could have been friends.

While I'm not usually one for contemporary novels with a hint of paranormal, I enjoyed this story. I'm more of an all or nothing girl, either it has to be straight contemp or full on paranormal. I don't like playing the "is this really happening or is this a metaphor for something else?" game. And even though I did get a little annoyed with all the talk about the afterlife, I was mostly able to look past it. I wanted Elle to find the answers she needed to not only help heal her grief but also so she could move on.

One part of this book that I really loved was the soap opera angle. At one point in my life I was a rather big fan of Days of Our Lives. I watched it every day religiously. Hey, once you get sucked into these stories it is hard to let them go. Anyway, the soap in this story, I'd Rather Be Loved, was pretty entertaining. Quite a bit ridiculous, but I think that is the point of soap operas. I'll admit that if this show were actually on the air. I'd probably watch it.

Overall, this is the perfect quick read for a day at the beach or lounging on the couch on your day off. While the subject matter is a somewhat heavy one, it is told in a fun and breezy way that doesn't weigh down the story. There is also plenty of romance and embarrassing incidents that will have you laughing out loud.

Beat the Heat Readathon: Goals

Hooray, it's time for another readathon! The Beat the Hear Readathon is hosted by Auntie Spinelli Reads and Phantasmic Reads. It runs from July 29th to August 11th.

My Goals:

Since this readathon lasts for two weeks, I'm hoping to make a pretty decent chunk in my reading pile. Here are the books I hope to read (at least most of them). I'm running a little behind on review books so this is the perfect opportunity to get caught up:

I know, that's a lot. I don't expect to make it through this whole pile, but I would really love to. And who knows, maybe I will throw a few random books in here and there. I'll be updating my progress every other day or so, although I'll do my best to update every night before bed. Here's hoping I can make it through all of these books!

Are you taking part in the readathon? How much are you hoping to read?

Showcase Sunday (66)

Welcome to Showcase Sunday, hosted by Books, Biscuits and Tea. Thank you, YA Fusion!

Thank you, Catherine!

Thank you, Much Loved Books!

Thank you, Shelf Awareness

I only have a few minutes to whip up this post because we have a TON of things going on in our house today but I wanted to say a quick thank you to those awesome bloggers, publishers and authors who hooked me up with these incredibly awesome goodies this week. I was absolutely shocked to see that I won the complete set of the Watchmen series from Shelf Awareness. I tweeted obsessively trying to get these and my husband was beyond thrilled when I gave them to him. He is a HUGE comic fan (he even writes, draws and publishes his own) and he has been wanting to get this series forever. He had a few of the issues but his weren't hardcovers or the complete set. He was quite pleased. And I was super pleased to win these awesome books as well as the kickass gift card, woohoo! I immediately put that to good use and took advantage of Amazon's bargain book sale and I will have a nice box full of new books to show you next week.

I'm also dedicating a lot of my time this week to updating my home library. I love Goodreads, but I needed something new to organize and catalog my books. After a very long search, I decided to try Libib.com. I used to keep a word doc of all my books but when my laptop died a few months ago I lost it. By the time I was able to get my information off the old hard drive, I had already collected a large amount of books that had been put away and there was no way I was going to be able to find and catalog them all. So now I am going through my shelves book by book and adding them to Libib via their ISBN numbers. It's taking a long time but it is worth it. Now I can just log on to my account from anywhere to see if I already have a certain book. This comes in super handy when I'm at the used bookstore because I tend to forget what I have and end up with duplicates.

What do you use, if anything, to keep a record of your books? And what books did you get this week? Leave me a link so I can come visit!

On My Wish List (94)

On My Wish List is a fun weekly event hosted by Workaday Reads and runs every Saturday. It's where we list all the books we desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming.

Synopsis:

New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren't always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it's hard for her to forget that people weren't always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It's hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings—the only boy Ember has ever loved.

I think I may be the only person left who hasn't read Article 5 yet. This was another one of those books that I was desperate to get but didn't, and then it fell completely off my radar. I was hoping to get my hands on a copy when the second book was published and there were some giveaways going on, but alas, it was still not meant to be. So here it sits on my wish list for now, looking all pretty.

What about you? Anything special you have your eye on this week? Leave me a link and I'll come check it out!

Review: Eternally 21 by Linda Joffe Hull

Synopsis:

Coupon-clipping Mrs. Frugalicious gets more than she bargained for

After Mr. Frank "Finance" Michaels loses the family's financial nest egg in a Ponzi scheme, his wife Maddie does whatever she can to help keep up the appearance that everything is financially fine. When she starts a bargain hunter's blog under the alias Mrs. Frugalicious, her website becomes a viral hit with a growing "frugarmy" of budget advice seekers.

While Maddie is researching "frugasm"-worthy deals on holiday shopping for teens, Eternally 21 store manager Laila DeSimone mistakenly accuses her of shoplifting. Then her day goes from bad to worse when Laila expires on the floor. Since Laila was a universally disliked manager, the murder suspect list is longer than Maddie's bargain spreadsheet. But when evidence points to Maddie as the prime suspect, she must track down the real culprit. Can she uncover the truth before police throw away her get-out-of-jail-free coupon for good?

My Thoughts:

Maddie Michaels is not your average shopper. Her husband is Frank Michaels, host of his own show and known as The King of Finance, so she knows a thing or two about shopping for luxury items. But when Frank reveals that he has lost all of their money in a Ponzi scheme, Maddie has no choice but to break out the coupons and be as frugal as possible. Realizing there is a lot more to couponing and bargain shopping than meets the eye, Maddie decides to start a website called Mrs. Frugalicious in order to help other people cash in on the great deals.

Unfortunately, Maddie can't let anyone know that she is Mrs. Frugalicious or she and Frank will be forced to admit their troubles and he could lose his job. So when Maddie is unjustly accused of shoplifting and the accuser dies in her presence, Maddie is an immediate suspect. She then forced to take matters into her own hands in order to clear her name and solve the murder with the hopes of keeping her secret identity under wraps.

I need to come right out and say that this book was a very entertaining read. Maddie, our main character and voice of reason, is just trying to make ends meet and keep up the charade of their lives in order to keep their home and the kids fed. This involves couponing, blogging and bargain shopping in order to keep the family afloat. This is something that just about everyone can connect with. Everyone struggles at some point in their lives and are forced to be frugal in order to make it, and even though Maddie was previously extremely rich, she doesn't come off as snooty or pompous, she is genuinely likable and even a little bit crazy. Who doesn't love crazy?

Aside with Maddie, there is no shortage of entertaining characters. Since Eternally 21 is located in the mall and that is where the murder takes place, everyone who shops there or works there become suspects. We meet a lot of the store owners and employees, some who have more than enough reason alone to want to kill Laila, and others who are just plain weird. There's also a monkey who can't seem to stop causing trouble.

The characters along are enough to keep you turning the pages late into the night but the plot is just as addicting. I thought for sure I knew what really happened to Laila and I was shocked at the truth. The author managed to pull one over on me that I just did not see coming. There's also a fun little bonus at the end that was absolutely hilarious and I want to thank the author for the extra giggle. You're my kind of lady!

Lastly though, what kind of coupon-blogging book would this be without some helpful couponing tips? The author has included tips along with Maddie's shopping trips to help save readers some cash. A lot of these tips I had never even though about and I am looking forward to putting them to good use.

I just can't recommend Eternally 21 enough. It's clever, funny, and you learn a few shopping tips too. What more could you ask for?

Weigh Me Wednesday: My Journey with Nutrisystem (#NSNation #ad)- Week 35

Welcome to Week 35 of Weigh Me Wednesday: My Journey with Nutrisystem! As a Nutrisystem Nation Blogger Program member, I am on the Women's Diabetes Select Program!

Once again it appears as if I have lost another week of time. I think this summer is getting the best of me. I think it's finally the end of the week and then I look at the calender and a whole other week has passed by and I didn't even realize it. My days are starting to blend in together. Now that my son no longer has summer school I'm afraid time will become even less apparent. There will be no need to remember what day it is and all that fun stuff. I'm a little worried for my sanity.

Exercise:

Anyway, I hate to report that there is no weight loss this week. What started out well with lots of activities (including five hours of swimming time!) quickly dwindled down to nothing these last two days. Monday I started feeling a little under the weather and by Tuesday morning I had a full blown migraine. I barely made it up to get my son on the bus for school, doing so only because I knew it was the last week, then went straight back to bed. I then somehow managed to get up to get him off the bus, promptly going back to bed as soon as he was home. I spent most of the day in bed but finally started to feel better in the afternoon.

I'm finally feeling about 90% today though so I am back at those Nutrisystem recommended daily activities. I've done my morning run on the elliptical and will be challenging the boy to some Wii when he gets home shortly. Nutrisystem recommends at least three activities every day that are ten minutes long. As much as I prefer going outside for my activities, it isn't in the cards this week. I'm so thankful for my elliptical machine to keep me going on days like these. Staying active is an extremely important part of the Nutrisystem program and for helping keep my diabetes under control.

Food:

This week I've been enjoying the last of my Nutrisystem frozen meals. I am going to be so sorry to see them go, especially the stuffed chicken. It is so delicious! Having Nutrisystem has been an absolute blessing and I haven't felt so healthy in a long, long time. It's very hard for me to manage my diabetes, especially when it comes to cooking meals that are both healthy and great tasting. I don't have to worry about that with Nutrisystem. With the diabetes program, I know that the food I am eating is exactly the right combination of nutrients I need and the right portion size too. I'm not sure what I'm going to do after my program ends, but I am determined to keep up the healthy living!

So what's my goal for next week?

I'm aiming for another pound!

Remember to stop by next week for Week 36's results!

Huge thanks to Meredith Bandy and Nutrisystem for giving me the opportunity to take part in their program!
Want to join me on my journey through weight loss with Nutrisystem? Head on over to their website here or call 1-888-853-4689 to join now! Come on, what are you waiting for? Let's get healthy!

Waiting On Wednesday (94)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Synopsis:

Small towns are nothing if not friendly. Friendship, Wisconsin (population: 688) is no different. Around here, everyone wears a smile. And no one ever locks their doors. Until, that is, high school sweetheart Ruth Fried is found murdered. Strung up like a scarecrow in the middle of a cornfield.

Unfortunately, Friendship’s police are more adept at looking for lost pets than catching killers. So Ruth’s best friend, Kippy Bushman, armed with only her tenacious Midwestern spirit and Ruth’s secret diary (which Ruth’s mother had asked her to read in order to redact any, you know, sex parts), sets out to find the murderer. But in a quiet town like Friendship—where no one is a suspect—anyone could be the killer.

It may be just me, but I find that the mother would want the friend to remove any "sex parts" kind of hilarious. I think I might do the same thing in her situation, which only makes me want to read this more. I love the quirky sweater cover and you know how addicted I am to books about murder. Seriously, I have a problem. If I'm not reading about it, I'm watching it on ID. Anyway, this has shot right up to the top of my wish list, if only we didn't have to wait for the new year :(

What are you anxiously awaiting? Leave me a link and I'll come check it out!

Review: Mandatory Release by Jess Riley

Synopsis:

Thirty-year-old Graham Finch spends his days trying to rehabilitate inmates and his nights trying to rehabilitate his heart--until a new coworker, his high school crush Drew Daniels, walks through the prison gates one hot summer morning. Drew is on the run from a painful past that's nearly crushed her faith in love. Together, they might have just what it takes to mend their hearts. If only finding their way to one another were easier than working with convicted felons.

Loaded with twisted humor and pathos, Mandatory Release is a darkly comic look at friendship, forgiveness, and love. It's a story about broken people putting themselves back together and learning that no matter what you lock up--a person, a secret, or your heart--sooner or later, everything must be released.

My Thoughts:

I knew as soon as I opened this book that I was going to love it. How did I know? Because of the dedication page that read "For my parents, who met in prison. They worked there together. But for a second it was pretty exciting, wasn't it?" That one little line and I was hooked. I'm also very happy to report that I was not at all disappointed in the following pages.

Mandatory Release is told in alternating chapters through Graham, a paralyzed prison counselor and Drew, his high school crush who has just moved back to town after a heartbreak. We meet Graham first who immediately charms us with his hilarious self-deprecating humor and quick tongue. Even though he is in a wheelchair, he isn't going to let that stop him from moving on with his life. From hanging out with his rather perverted (yet still adorable) friends to dinner dates gone wrong, Graham keeps a rather humorous outlook and never stops cracking jokes. He was by far my favorite character in this story, always good for a laugh even when you knew how badly he was hurting. But I understood his way of thinking. Sometimes life deals you a bad hand and you just have to make the most of it.

Then we meet Drew. Back in her home town and once again living with her parents, she is recovering from a broken heart. We don't exactly know what happened between her and her boyfriend Ben, and even though we do get some small hints along the way, we don't find out the whole story until just around the end of the book. This drove me a little crazy but it did keep up the suspense. I liked Drew for the most part, I felt sorry for her. I understood why she made some rather reckless decisions and even when she knew she shouldn't. I wanted to see things work out for her and to possibly end up with Graham who was still harboring a pretty serious crush.

Mandatory Release is a remarkable story about heartbreak, depression, death and even love. You will fall in love with Graham and Drew immediately, desperate to see them find ways to overcome their obstacles, whether they are emotional or physical. Jess Riley has a way of making you laugh at even the hardest parts of life and I for one can't wait to read more of her books.

I very highly recommend Mandatory Release to book lovers of all kinds, whether you are a fan of Chick Lit, tough issues or are just looking for something quick to make you laugh. This book has all you need within its covers and you don't want to miss it.
