It was another great week for books, hooray! I can't tell you how absolutely THRILLED I was to find a copy of Always Watching at my door. I had no idea I was getting it and I have been DYING to read it. I absolutely love Chevy Stevens, her books are amazing. I can't wait to sit down and read this finally. I also received some other pretty sweet wins and I can't wait to read those either. My husband was thrilled to receive The Walking Dead book. He is a HUGE comic fan, he even writes and draws his own. We haven't watched the show yet, but that's mostly because I have a very hard time with zombies. They scare me, I end up with severe nightmares. He wants to see it, but I am never out of the house so he never has a chance.

I want to thank all of the awesome bloggers, authors and publishers who hooked me up with this kickass bundle of goodies. You guys are awesome!!!

On My Wish List (81)

On My Wish List is a fun weekly event hosted by Workaday Reads and runs every Saturday. It's where we list all the books we desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming.

Synopsis:

Litigation lawyer and harried single mother Kate Baron is stunned when her daughter's exclusive private school in Park Slope, Brooklyn, calls with disturbing news: her intelligent, high-achieving fifteen-year-old daughter, Amelia, has been caught cheating.

Kate can't believe that Amelia, an ambitious, levelheaded girl who's never been in trouble would do something like that. But by the time she arrives at Grace Hall, Kate's faced with far more devastating news. Amelia is dead.

Seemingly unable to cope with what she'd done, a despondent Amelia has jumped from the school's roof in an act of "spontaneous" suicide. At least that's the story Grace Hall and the police tell Kate. And overwhelmed as she is by her own guilt and shattered by grief, it is the story that Kate believes until she gets the anonymous text:

She didn't jump.

Sifting through Amelia's emails, text messages, social media postings, and cell phone logs, Kate is determined to learn the heartbreaking truth about why Amelia was on Grace Hall's roof that day-and why she died.

Told in alternating voices, Reconstructing Amelia is a story of secrets and lies, of love and betrayal, of trusted friends and vicious bullies. It's about how well a parent ever really knows a child and how far one mother will go to vindicate the memory of a daughter whose life she could not save.

I just came across this book for the first time the other day. How have I not seen this before? I'm determined to get to the bottom of why Amelia died and if she did, in fact, jump. These are my favorite kinds of stories mysteries with a little family drama thrown in. Hopefully I can get a copy soon!

What's on your wish list this week? Leave me a link in the comments and I'll come check it out!

A Visit and Guest Post from Marshall Moore, author of Bitter Orange!

Today I am pleased to welcome Marshall Moore, author of Bitter Orange, to the blog. Marshall has stopped by to tell us a little more about himself and where he got his inspiration for his new novel.

Welcome, Marshall!

Crime and Invisibility

Let me start out by saying that I’m not going to encourage you to slip a bottle of Merlot into your backpack after you finish reading this.  That being said, if you’re unable to control your illicit impulses, I take no responsibility.  My new novel Bitter Orange is about a guy stealing things, spying on people, and committing various acts of mayhem while invisible.  There’s a twist: the cause-and-effect sequence is reversed.  Seth, our anti-hero, isn’t doing these things because he’s invisible, exactly; he’s doing them in order to become invisible, because that’s the only time his ability works.  You can see how this would make things a bit complicated.

I used to live in Korea, a country without a large expat population.  I’m white.  And I never got used to being stared at.  Little kids would gawk, grab their parents, and point, slack-jawed.  When a school bus would pass by as I walked down the street, the kids would hang out the windows and shriek at the top of their lungs, Hello?  What is your name?  Where are you from?  And perhaps the ne plus ultra of my expat experience in the Land of the Morning Calm was the unabashed way in which guys would crane their necks to stare at me in the men’s room.  They wouldn’t even pretend they weren’t looking.  While there’s also much that I liked about living in Korea (and I love going back for visits now that I live in Hong Kong), being treated like an interesting zoo animal did uncomfortable things to my head.

At some point, the light bulb went on: curiosity is human nature, but these fascinated Koreans weren’t seeing me at all and perhaps weren’t even trying to.  They were seeing a privileged skin color, a set of assumptions, a mythology.  Putting these thoughts in my home context, I went through the obvious revelations first (so this is what it’s like to be a person of color in America) to the insidious (what happens if someone who looks kind of like me gets in trouble with the law?).  Even when no harm may be intended, the net effect of so many minor abrasions is a scar.

And that’s when I heard the cannabis rumor.  Apparently the Korean drug enforcement authorities take a zero-tolerance stance on recreational drugs.  Whenever a foreigner was arrested for possession of marijuana, the cops would confiscate his mobile phone, check all the contacts, round up all the other foreigners whose names and numbers were in there, and subject them to drug tests... or deport them if they would not comply.  To frame this properly, I should point out that there are a lot of lonely Western kidults in Korea teaching English in rural towns, drinking too much, quarreling online, and passing on tall tales from the local expat watering holes.  Stories like this one circulate like dollar bills.  But was this the truth or completely apocryphal?  No one I knew had been personally affected, but everyone I knew seemed to have heard some version of the story.  Even though I never so much as smelled the smoke from a burning blunt during my time in Korea, I always wondered whether someone I knew would be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Would I get a phone call telling me to report to the local cop shop for a urine test, the logic being Well, you’re white, so you must be guilty till proven innocent?

Like the best lies, fiction is at its most effective when it tastes like the truth.  Even though my work isn’t autobiographical, I can always tell when I reread it what was on my mind at the time.  No, I’ve never had the power to turn quasi-invisible, but when I wrote Bitter Orange, I had spent several years standing out like a big white sore thumb.  Being exactly the opposite of invisible made me think about what people were seeing (or not) when they looked at me, and these musings found their way into my work.

Let me wrap this up by saying I’m not encouraging you to steal license plates off cars, steal the cars themselves, or drive to Vegas in the aforementioned stolen cars to rob casinos in broad daylight (and no, I’m not saying these things happen in Bitter Orange... but they might).  In the book, we have a person whose life has been turned inside out.  Then it gets turned upside down and taken for a spin in the tumble dryer.  Then he finds out he can do unusual things.  What choices will he make when his moral center is no longer even on the page?  I promise, it’s not autobiographical.  Honest.

About Bitter Orange:

Seth Harrington can be invisible or undetectable, but he is not a superhero. The ability only works in morally grey situations; the rest of the time, he can't turn it on and off at will. He can use a movie ticket stub to buy a coffee or a one-dollar bill to pay for a cell phone. He can stop muggings in plain sight, unseen, but only with worse violence. But this only adds to his confusion about his place in the world. Still reeling from the horrors of the September 11 terrorist attacks and ambivalent about his future, Seth is at a crossroads: Can he be one of the good guys by doing bad things, or are his newfound powers part of someone else's malevolent agenda? There are no easy answers or expected outcomes in Marshall Moore's exploration of urban life and the ways that people can disappear.

Weigh Me Wednesday: My Journey with Nutrisystem (#NSNation #spon)- Week 22

Welcome to Week 22 of Weigh Me Wednesday: My Journey with Nutrisystem! As a Nutrisystem Nation Blogger Program member, I am on the Women's Diabetes Select Program!

First, I'm sorry I'm a day late on my post. We have been incredibly busy over the last few days and I didn't have a chance to sit down and do it yesterday. Second, I lost half a pound! It's not as much as I'd like, but it's still something.

Exercise:

I don't know what happened to the beautiful weather that we had for a whole two days last week but it has been windy and absolutely freezing over the last week. Even though it looks bright and sunny outside, I can feel the wind through my window and it is not warm. So unfortunately  I wasn't able to get outside for any new activities. I'm starting to think it's a conspiracy. So right now I have just been doing my usual Wii games and elliptical workouts for my Nutrisystem recommended daily activities. We are supposed to do three activities a day for at least ten minutes each. I admit I have slacked over the last few days because we have been so busy. I'm hoping things will die down a bit for next week so I can get more exercise in.

Food:

This week I tried a new frozen dinner, the Salisbury Steak with Mac and Cheese. While I can't say that I was much of a fan of the mac and cheese (I'm really picky when it comes to this), I did really like the steak. Nutrisystem has an incredible menu with plenty to choose from, which is a great thing for people like me who are a bit on the picky side. The best part is that they have a menu plan specially made for those of us with diabetes. This helps me eat the right portions as well as keep my blood sugar under control. And it's easy to cook, which is also awesome for those of us who are a little on the lazy side too :)

So what's my goal for next week?

I'm aiming for another pound next week. Hopefully the weather will finally change and I can get outside and work towards a bigger goal. I just know that if I could play some tennis or badminton a few times a week that there would be pounds just dripping off.

Remember to stop by next week for Week 23's results!

Huge thanks to Meredith Bandy and Nutrisystem for giving me the opportunity to take part in their program!

Review: Captain Disaster Book One: The Influxitron by Del Shannon

Synopsis:

Kevin Tobin is a relatively ordinary twelve-year old dealing with the aftermath of his father's tragic death in a mountain biking accident near their home in Boulder, Colorado. To escape from his emotional turmoil, Kevin has developed his imagination into a dangerous foil and a powerful ally. While he antagonizes his sister through his superhero antics, his ability to escape inside his character's (Captain Disaster) head becomes critical to his survival after his life is once-again turned upside down a year after his father s death. A mysterious package arrives in the mail, Kevin and his best friend are hunted down by a ruthless villain set upon world domination, and after enlisting Kevin s teenage sister and her pizza-delivery boyfriend in a battle for control over time itself, the secret of Kevin s whole existence is revealed to him by a source we never expected. Del Shannon's imaginative story telling and his appreciation for the powers of family and the desire of young boys to both escape reality and prove themselves within it make this a book with wide appeal for readers of all ages.

~My Thoughts~

Kevin Tobin is your average 12-year-old. He goes to school, harasses his sister and is always causing trouble with his best friend, Tony. Unfortunately, Kevin's father passed away a year earlier in a terrible accident. Since then, Kevin has been getting into far more trouble, especially when he escapes to his imagination and dreams that he is someone else. Almost a year after his father died, Kevin receives a strange package in the mail. When he and Tony start messing around with it, they realize it must be something very dangerous and important. So important, in fact, that it's owner will stop at nothing to get it back. Once they have been discovered to have the object, they are running for their lives.

This book was nothing that I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be a quick story about a young boy who uses daydreams to escape his father's death. While that was part of it, there was so much more! Between the covers you find an incredible journey for Kevin, both physical and emotional. Not to mention the non-stop action!

I read the first chapter of Captain Disaster while hanging out with my kids at the park. Good thing I stopped when I did because when I sat back down to read more at home I couldn't put it down! I ended up finishing it in one sitting. Kevin was such a likable character. A little crazy, but still hilarious and endearing. I loved his imagination, it reminded me of my own kids and the weird things they come up with. When things start to get tough, Kevin retreats into his imagination and a different character will emerge, each one having it's own take charge personality.

Besides Kevin, the rest of the characters are equally entertaining. I especially enjoyed Scratch the pizza dude. I couldn't stop imagining him to sound like Keanu Reeves in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Each character brings a certain quality to the story, even the bad guys!

Most of the story takes place in the mountains and Shannon really gives you a great description of them. Not incredibly descriptive and drawn out, but all you need to imagine the surroundings for yourself. I could picture each scene in my mind clearly.

This book really blew me away. It was funny, yet intense, and incredibly well written with some surprising twists and turns that you don't expect. Not to mention the fun cover! Go get yourself a copy of Captain Disaster and start reading. You won't be disappointed!!!

Review: Bones Buried in the Dirt by David S. Atkinson

Synopsis:

The stories of this novel in story form act together to present the young life a boy named Peter. Ranging from Peter at ages four to twelve, the stories focus on the moments in childhood that get buried in the mind but are never fully absorbed. Unlike most coming of age tales, Peter is never brought forward into adulthood. Rather, though the stories are reflective, the distance is short. Thus, instead of a how an adult became who they are, the result is a becoming–a sonar picture of the person Peter will be.

~My Thoughts~

Bones Buried in the Dirt is a group of  stories about Peter, a young boy growing up and experiencing childhood. Each chapter is a new day in his life, and each day is a new experience. While some stories may seem far more significant than others, each one will have an impact on Peter and will shape who he becomes.

I have to say that Bones Buried in the Dirt is one of the most intense books I have read in a long time. I knew going into this book that Peter was a younger child, but somewhere along the beginning I forgot just how young he really is. I was then shocked back into reality during the most uncomfortable story, Training, in which Peter and his friends "practice" kissing each other, which leads to other things. Even though this did make me extremely uncomfortable, I understood it's necessity. These stories took place back in the 1980's well before internet and the constant ability to Google whatever you want to know. I think these scenarios were far more frequent than anyone realizes.

For the most part, I liked Peter. I also grew up in the '80s and could understand his lifestyle. He had a cruel father and some of his friends were bullies, and for this I felt sorry for him. I can't imagine what it is like for a young boy growing up, especially with friends that are mean for no other reason than to just be mean, and with friends that are constantly trying to out do each other. I definitely walked away from this book with a far better understanding, which I truly appreciate since I have a son Peter's age.

What I truly loved most about this book is that even though some of the stories seemed rather insignificant, they actually weren't. I don't know about you, but I know that I have held onto some of the strangest memories growing up. Memories of just random days that seemed to mean absolutely nothing. These are the days that shape you as a person the most, they are far more frequent than any other. It is how you handle yourself in those every day situations that have much more of an impact on how you react to life's curve balls.

Overall, I truly enjoyed this book. It took me back to my own childhood and reminded me what it was like to be young in a time when there was no internet or video games at the ready. I was also very happy with the way Peter's story ended and it gave me hope for his future. I love walking away from a book with a good feeling, especially when the previous pages had your heart thumping in panic and doubt.

If you enjoy a good coming of age story, is an '80s child like me, or is just looking for a deeper read, I highly recommend Bones Buried in the Dirt. You won't be disappointed.

Waiting On Wednesday (81)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title:The In-Between
Author: Barbara Stewart
Expected Publication Date: November 5, 2013

Synopsis:

When Elanor’s near-death experience opens a door to a world inhabited by bold, beautiful Madeline, she finds her life quickly spiraling out of control

Fourteen-year-old Elanor Moss has always been an outcast who fails at everything she tries—she's even got the fine, white scars to prove it. Moving was supposed to be a chance at a fresh start, a way to leave behind all the pain and ugliness of her old life. But, when a terrible car accident changes her life forever, her near-death experience opens a door to a world inhabited by Madeline Torus . . . Madeline is everything Elanor isn’t: beautiful, bold, brave. She is exactly what Elanor has always wanted in a best friend and more—their connection runs deeper than friendship. But Madeline is not like other girls, and Elanor has to keep her new friend a secret or risk being labeled “crazy.” Soon, though, even Elanor starts to doubt her own sanity. Madeline is her entire life, and that life is drastically spinning out of control. Elanor knows what happens when your best friend becomes your worst enemy. But what happens when your worst enemy is yourself?

I have to admit that the first thing that caught my eye about this book was the cover, I love it. I know some people have had enough of the lone, sad looking girl covers but I don't think I could ever get sick of them. Anyway, I love stories about mentally ill people, especially teens. I need to know why Madeline has to be kept secret. I think I have a pretty good idea, now I just need to see if I'm right. November can't come soon enough!

What about you? What are you waiting on this week? Leave me a link in the comments and I'll come check it out!

"I didn't want to be in this underground labyrinth of death, with this vampire I didn't like and certainly didn't trust. Because watching him fling himself at the rabids, grinning demonically as he tore them limb from limb, reminded me too much of myself. That thing that I kept locked away, the beast that goaded me into raw animal rage and bloodlust. The part that made us dangerous to every human we encountered."
