300 Follower Giveaway Winners!

Back in January, Book Cover Justice reached 300 followers. I was stunned! When my sister asked me last year if I wanted to start a book blog with her, I jumped at the chance. I was excited to connect with other book lovers around the world. So when we reached 300 followers, I couldn't believe it. Who knew that people actually wanted to read my little opinion on random books? So I figured I would have a giveaway to thank everyone for their support and for coming back to the blog and offering their opinions. I never imagined that when the giveaway ended, I'd have gained another 200+ followers! I just want to say thank you to each and everyone one of you. You really have no idea how much this means to me.

As some of you may know, my husband works two full time jobs and is only home for about eight hours a night, basically he comes home to sleep and that's about it. We have two kids and one vehicle. Since he goes back and forth to two jobs, he has the car all week and I am pretty much stranded at the house. Reading and blogging are my stress relievers. Knowing that I'm not just sitting here typing away to no one really makes a huge difference in my life. I like knowing that there is actually someone out there who is reading my thoughts and I'm not just babbling to the wind.

Anyway, I have to admit that this giveaway was a huge success. There was a record 2,743 entries! Since I gained so many followers during the giveaway, there were six winners! That's crazy!

A few things I found interesting about this giveaway:

  • The person with the last entry was chosen as a winner! (not that specific entry though)
  • The person with the very first entry was chosen as a winner! (not that specific entry either though)
  • The same person was chosen for two different prizes! That person also happens to be the very first blogger that I "met" and has since become one of my favorite blogging buddies.
  • Not one winner lives the in US. Actually, there was one US winner but she has moved to Korea for a year so technically she doesn't live in the US right now.
So I'd like to say a huge congrats to the following winners:

Waiting On Wednesday (22)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: Butter
Author: Erin Jade Lange
Expected Publication Date: October 2, 2012

From Goodreads:

A boy everyone calls “Butter” is about to make Scottsdale High history. He’s going to eat himself to death live on the Internet – and everyone will watch.

He announces his deadly plan to an army of peers and expects pity, insults or even indifference. Instead, he finds morbid encouragement. When that encouragement tips the scales into popularity, Butter has a reason to live. But if he doesn’t go through with his plan, he’ll lose everything.

I saw this one just a week or two and it immediately grabbed my attention. This sounds like nothing I have ever read so I am anxious to see how the story plays out. I think I'll be pre-ordering this one!

Review: Mountain Man by Keith C. Blackmore

Title: Mountain Man
Author: Keith C. Blackmore
Publication Date: December 15, 2011

From Goodreads:

Augustus Berry lives a day-to-day existence comprised of waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the inevitable day when “they” will come up the side of his mountain and penetrate his fortress. Living on the outskirts of a city and scavenging for whatever supplies remain after civilization died two years ago, Gus knows that every time he goes down into undead suburbia could be his last.

My Thoughts:

When I was first approached by the author to review this book, I almost declined. Not because of anything I had read about him or his books, but because of this one reason: zombies scare the hell out of me. I can't watch zombie movies because my overactive brain loves to play cruel tricks on my while I sleep. I have never read a zombie book before in fear of that very same reason. But instead of being a scaredy-cat and declining, I decided I had to start somewhere and this might as well be that start. That, and I'm really loving this cover! So, I happily agreed to give it a go, nightmares and all.

I made a very, very good choice. Mountain Man was far more than what I expected. In fact, I read this over two days, ignoring all attempts by my husband to get me to put the book down and pay attention to him. The story starts after the world has fallen victim to a horrible virus, leaving only a small amount of humans left to scavenge for survival. Gus, our main character, has been lucky enough to come across somewhat of a fortress in the side of a mountain that the owners had abandoned. It has almost everything he needs, including solar panels for electricity, and a wall surrounding it. Unfortunately, Gus still has to make many trips into the city to scavenge for food, water and other supplies.

On each of these trips, Gus is forced to battle the undead, and there are a ton of them. No trip goes easily for him, but he does manage to survive for two years on his own without being eaten or catching the virus himself. On one of these trips, he comes across Scott, another survivor out scavenging to survive. Scott has been through quite a nightmare of his own and is almost dead when Gus finds him. After recuperating at the mountain side home, Scott and Gus team up and learn that working together is far better than going at it alone. And also much safer.

The banter between Gus and Scott is hilarious. I don't know if I'd be able to keep up such a great attitude after going through what they went through, but I'm sure the fact that they love to drink has something to do with it. I had no trouble connecting with either Gus or Scott and could see myself in their place or even sitting around playing drunken Scrabble with them. Even though these are just two people who just happened to come across each other in a horrible way, you can tell that they start to care about each other and look out for one another. Even with the bickering and constant picking on each other, they know that they are all each other has and they are willing to fight an onslaught of undead to keep the other safe.

Aside from the comedy, the writing style is also something I loved. Not overdone with unnecessary descriptions, the story flows nicely and is straight to the point. Blackmore tells you how it is and that is that. Even so, you are still able to get a very clear image in your mind about the characters, surroundings and even those very creepy undead.

Overall, I only had one issue with Mountain Man: I wanted more! I didn't know this was the beginning of a series, so unfortunately I was pretty bummed when it ended. However, according to the author's website, there will be two more books! This makes me a very happy reader. There were some plot points left unfinished so I am extremely excited to read the next two books and see where this story goes.

I can't recommend this book enough. It was something completely out of my comfort zone and I was truly amazed by it. If you love a good scary story, zombies, a good survival story or are just looking for a great new read, please don't pass this one up.

Oh yes, one more thing: no nightmares! This makes me extremely happy and now I can go back and pick up all those awesome looking zombie books that I didn't dare read before :)

You can get your own Kindle copy of Mountain Man by Keith C. Blackmore at Amazon.com for just $3.99!

Title: Thumped
Author: Megan McCafferty
Expected Publication Date: April 24, 2012

From Goodreads:

It’s been thirty-five weeks since twin sisters Harmony and Melody went their separate ways. And now their story has become irresistible: twins separated at birth, each due to deliver twins…on the same day!

Married to Ram and living in Goodside, Harmony spends her time trying to fit back into the community she once believed in. But she can’t forget about Jondoe, the guy she fell for under the strangest of circumstances.

To her adoring fans, Melody has achieved everything: a major contract and a coupling with the hottest bump prospect around. But this image is costing her the one guy she really wants.

The girls’ every move is analyzed by millions of fans eagerly counting down to “Double Double Due Date.” They’re two of the most powerful teen girls on the planet, and they could do only one thing to make them even more famous:

Tell the truth.

I have to be honest that Bumped wasn't as great as I thought it was going to be. Even so, I am looking forward to seeing how this story ends so I will be giving it a second chance. Am I the only one who felt this way?

Review: H1O N1 by M.R. Cornelius

Title: H10 N1
Author: M.R. Cornelius
Publication Date: April 12, 2011

From Goodreads:
A deadly influenza virus rages out of control. There is no easy-fix vaccine. No eleventh-hour containment. Only death. With no workforce, power plants have been shut down, police and fire departments have collapsed, crops lie unpicked in the fields.
When Dr. Taeya Sanchez finds herself unceremoniously dismissed from an emergency medical facility in New York, she decides to steal the hospital's armored van for a midnight escape. Unfortunately, Rick DeAngelo, a driver for the hospital, has already stocked the van for his own getaway.
Thrown into an unfriendly alliance, these two must pick their way across the dangerous wasteland of America in search of a safe haven. And as the miles roll by, they discover that the living should be feared much more than the festering corpses out there.
My Thoughts:
When Dr. Taeya Sanchez mouths off a few too many times to her boss, she knows she is getting ready to be fired. Unfortunately, the entire population is infected with a deadly virus and she doesn't have very many options. Just one, actually. Fill up a stolen truck with as many supplies and food as she can get and hope to make it somewhere safe before either getting caught, killed or catching the disease herself. The only problem with her plan? She is now stuck road tripping with the ego-maniac Rick DeAngelo, another hospital worker set on escaping while he still can.
H10 N1 is almost like an adult oriented dystopian novel, my favorite! We pick up the story after the virus has spread everywhere and we learn bits and pieces about it as we go. People are dying off like crazy, either they have contracted the virus or they are so scared they are killing themselves before it gets to that point. I knew as soon as I read the prologue that I was going to like this book. It starts off with a suicide assistance hot line and we go along as a caller discusses her husband's suicide with the hot line worker. At first, I thought she was calling to stop herself from committing suicide herself. Nope. I think my husband must have thought I'd lost it because I was talking to the book as the worker talked this lady into poisoning herself. I didn't see that coming. I knew right there that this was going to be a fun read.
I really enjoyed getting to know Taeya and Rick, and I loved their banter. When we first meet Taeya, she kind of comes off as snotty or stuck up. I'll admit that I didn't like her at first. Rick, on the other hand, I didn't mind as much even though he was clearly high on himself. Once the two were thrown together and had to actually communicate, I saw that neither of them were what I first thought them to be and I truly did connect with them. We get to hear from both Taeya and Rick, each of their parts told in alternating chapters which I love. I find it adds to a story when we get to hear from the main characters involved.
The only issue I had, and it is purely only my opinion, was some of the language. I don't think you will find any words in this book that you wouldn't find in maybe a romance novel, but I am very uncomfortable in my own skin and certain talk just turns me off. Again, this is my own opinion and honestly, I've been called a prude more than once so don't go by my opinion alone. There actually isn't a lot of this language, I think I just pick up on it because I'm not used to it.
Anyway, if you love a good thriller or are a fan of dystopian, give this one a look. The writing is solid, the characters are raw and honest and find themselves in some pretty intense situations that are sure to keep you turning the pages.

*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence my opinion in any way and all views and opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Title: Unwind
Author: Neal Shusterman
Publication Date: November 6, 2007

From Goodreads:

Connor, Risa, and Lev are running for their lives.

The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child "unwound," whereby all of the child's organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn't technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, a ward of the state is not enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. Together, they may have a chance to escape and to survive.

I just recently stumbled across this book in the store and almost bought it but decided to go with something else instead. It sounds pretty interesting though, so I'm hoping a trade will open up for it soon!

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: The Thing About The Truth
Author: Lauren Barnholdt
Expected Publication Date: July 10, 2012

From Goodreads:

In this humorous love story from the author of Two-Way Street, an unlikely romance is the best sort of surprise—but the wrong secret can ruin everything. Kelsey’s not going to let one mistake ruin her life. Sure, she got kicked out of prep school and all her old friends are shutting her out. But Kelsey’s focused on her future, and she’s determined to get back on track at Concordia High.

Isaac’s been kicked out of more schools than he can count. Since his father’s a state senator, Isaac’s life is under constant scrutiny—but Concordia High’s his last stop before boarding school, so Isaac’s hoping to fly under the radar and try to stay put for a change.

When Kelsey and Isaac meet, it’s anything but love at first sight. She thinks he’s an entitled brat, and he thinks she’s a stuck-up snob. So it surprises them both when they start to fall for each other. Kelsey’s happy for the first time in months, and Isaac’s never felt this way about anyone before...But nothing’s ever completely perfect. Everyone has secrets, and Isaac and Kelsey are no exceptions. These two may have fallen hard, but there’s one thing that can ruin it all: the truth.

I love contemporary YA and this one is looking like it's gonna be awesome. I can't wait!
